“THE TRUE VALUE OF WISDOM”
(Proverbs 17:1 – 20:30)

“Why should foolish people have money to buy wisdom, when they don’t even understand what it is?” — Proverbs 17:16

Simple Truth:
You can’t buy wisdom with money. Real wisdom comes from a heart that listens to and obeys God.

Reflection:

According to some studies, the average cost of going to college for four years is about $108,000. That’s a big price to pay just to “gain wisdom.”

These days, you can learn almost anything online for free. So why do people still pay so much for school? Is the degree and the school really that important?

I’ll remember that question next time I get on a flight and see that the pilot says he graduated from “YouTube University.” (No thanks!)

Proverbs 17:16 makes a clear point: having the money to gain wisdom doesn’t matter if you don’t have the right heart. A foolish person may have the money, but without respect for God, wisdom won’t help them. This truth runs through Proverbs 17–20. These chapters show the difference between living wisely and foolishly, being humble or proud, honest or dishonest.

Real wisdom doesn’t come from money, intelligence, or fame. It starts with respecting and honoring God (Proverbs 1:7). You can’t buy wisdom, and you can’t earn it by effort alone. God gives wisdom to those who truly seek Him with humble hearts.

All of this leads us to Jesus. The Bible says that all wisdom and knowledge are found in Him (Colossians 2:3). He isn’t just a smart teacher—He is wisdom. When we put our faith in Him, He gives us new hearts that understand and live out God’s truth.

Reflection Questions:

• Am I looking for godly wisdom, or just trying to figure things out on my own?

   

• Do I care more about wisdom than success, money, or comfort?

   

• Is my heart open and willing to follow God’s direction?

   

Application:

1. Pray for a teachable heart. Ask God to take away pride and help you want His wisdom above anything else.

    

2. Learn from Jesus. Spend time reading the Gospels to understand how He lived and what He taught.

    

3. Choose wise friends. Proverbs says that if you walk with wise people, you will become wise too (Proverbs 13:20).

    

Closing Prayer:
Father God, I admit that sometimes I’ve looked for wisdom in the wrong places or thought I could handle life without You. Please give me a heart that truly wants You and Your truth. Help me value Your wisdom and live by Your Word. Thank You for Jesus, who gives me everything I need. Teach me to follow Him every day. In His name I pray, Amen.
