“THE TRAGEDY OF A DIVIDED HEART”
(1 Kings 10:1—11:43; 2 Chronicles 1:14-17; 9:1-31)
For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. – 1 Kings 11:1-8
Solomon, the wisest man to walk the earth, whose wrote volumes sharing divine insight, whose hands built the temple of Yahweh, whose prayers brought fire from heaven – this Solomon fell. Not in his youth, when passions rage, but in his old age, when wisdom should have matured into steadfastness. The man who wrote, “Above all else, guard your heart” (Proverbs 4:23), did not guard his own.
The text begins with a shock: “Now King Solomon loved many foreign women…” (1 Kings 11:1). This is not merely a footnote, it is the cause of his downfall. God had warned Israel not to intermarry with those who served other gods, “for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods” (v. 2). Solomon, in his pride, believed himself to be the exception. He clung to these women in love, and they turned his heart.
This is not simply a story about polygamy or political alliances – it is a story about idolatry. Solomon built high places for Chemosh and Molech, detestable gods who demanded child sacrifice. He did this on the mountain in sight of the temple he had built for Yahweh. The king who once led Israel in covenant renewal now leads them into apostasy.
What happened? Solomon’s heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father (v. 4). Solomon’s sin was not a momentary lapse, it was a slow drift, a gradual erosion of devotion. He did not wake up one day and decide to worship idols. He tolerated compromise, and compromise became apostasy. A great start does not guarantee a faithful finish.
Application:
- Guard your heart.
No one is above the need for vigilance. Wisdom is not a vaccine against sin. Gifts and accomplishments are not substitutes for obedience. - Beware of compromise.
Don’t justify “small” sins. Seek accountability. Stay rooted in scripture and prayer.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, examine my heart. Reveal any compromises that I have tolerated; affections that I have allowed to rival my love for You. Tear down any high places that I have built in the shadows. Strengthen my resolve to obey you completely. Amen.
