“ZEAL WITHOUT OBEDIENCE IS NOT ENOUGH”
(2 Kings 9–10; 2 Chronicles 22:7–9)
“Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. But he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam.” — 2 Kings 10:28–29
Simple Truth:
Starting strong for God is good—but staying faithful to Him is even better.
Jehu was chosen by God to become king of Israel and to bring judgment on the evil house of Ahab. He acted with great energy and boldness. He removed wicked leaders like Joram, Jezebel, and Ahaziah (2 Kings 9; 2 Chronicles 22:7–9). He also destroyed many of the people who worshiped the false god Baal.
At first, it looked like Jehu was doing everything right. He had strong passion (zeal) for the Lord. But then, he stopped short. He removed Baal worship but didn’t take away the golden calves that Israel had been worshiping for years. Jehu obeyed God partly—but not fully.
Jehu reminds us that passion without full obedience isn’t enough. God wants our whole hearts, not just part of them. In contrast, Jesus obeyed the Father completely—even to the cross—so we could be saved and live fully for Him.
Reflections:
- Jehu started strong but didn’t finish well. God wants more than a good beginning—He wants lasting faithfulness.
- God notices full obedience. Jehu did some good things, but he held on to old sins.
- Jesus is our perfect example. He obeyed fully and gave His life for us so we can follow Him with our whole heart.
Application:
Ask yourself: Am I obeying God in every part of my life, or am I holding something back? Don’t stop halfway. With the help of the Holy Spirit, take steps to remove anything that keeps you from fully following Jesus.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that You want all of my heart. Help me to not just start strong, but to stay faithful. Show me any area in my life where I’m holding back from You. Thank You for Jesus, who obeyed You fully. Help me to follow Him more every day. In His name I pray, Amen.
