“LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING”
(Isaiah 3:1-5:30)

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” – Isaiah 5:20 (ESV) 

A few days ago, at the office, I made myself a cup of coffee and went searching for sugar. I found a ziplock bag with white crystals inside, it looked like sugar, so I scooped some in, stirred it up, and took a big sip. Instantly, I realized something was off. It wasn’t sweet at all; in fact, it was salty. I had put salt in my coffee by mistake. It looked right, but it was all wrong.

That’s exactly what Isaiah was talking about. He warned about people who mix up what’s good and what’s evil, calling the wrong things right, and the right things wrong. Sometimes things look fine on the outside. They may even feel right at first. But if they don’t match God’s truth, they leave a bad taste in our lives. Just like that salty coffee, the world’s version of “truth” can seem okay, until you actually try it.

The danger we see in getting used to trading what’s wrong for what seems right is that, over time, we stop recognizing the difference. Our hearts can slowly drift from God’s truth without us even realizing it. This is what happened to Israel. They became so accustomed to mixing their own desires with God’s commands that they didn’t see the gap between their actions and God’s Word. That’s why we need to stay close to God and regularly check our thinking against His Word. He’s the one who helps us recognize the salt for what it really is.

Simple Truth:
Not everything that looks good is good. God’s truth is the only real guide.

Reflections:

• Are there things in your life that seem fine but don’t match what God says is true?
• How can you be more careful about what you accept as “good” or “harmless”?

Application:

• Check everything, your choices, your values, your influences against God’s Word.
• Don’t rely on appearances.  Ask God for wisdom to see clearly.
• When you make a mistake, don’t panic, learn from it and turn back to the truth. 
• Be intentional about seeking God’s guidance in everyday decisions.

Closing Prayer…
Lord, thank You for showing me the difference between what looks good and what really is good. Help me not to be fooled by things that seem right but lead me away from You. Give me a heart that loves Your truth and eyes that see clearly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
