“WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS REQUIRED”
(Micah 5:1 – 7:20)
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” – Micah 6:8
The prophet Micah shares many deep truths, prophesying not only of the advent of Christ (His birth), and Christ’s second advent (the “Second Coming”), but also of the myriad of events, problems and difficulties for God’s people throughout the times.
Sometimes we become confused about how to live, and what we should be doing as Christ-followers, as well as what we shouldn’t be doing! But, an over-arching principle is found in Micah 6:8 regarding what is good to do, and what is required of us. There are three life principles found in this singular verse:
- Justice – Do what is right! Treat people fairly. Stand for justice and against injustice.
- Kindness – Be kind to others! Show compassion, kindness and forgiveness toward others.
- Humility – Be humble! Life is not all about you! You are a servant of God, so walk in humility!
This is a call to action; it states in clear words the requirements for us as believers. It is an encouragement to live out our faith through right relationships and Christ-like choices.
Simple Truth:
Every day when you get out of bed, you are faced with choices of how to live, what to do, where to go, and how to interact with those around you. Do what is right, be kind to others, and walk in humility.
Reflections and Application:
- When you observe people who are hurting or being treated badly, what will you do to help them out?
- Each day, make it a priority to find an action of kindness to perform for someone else.
- Examine your priorities, and be willing to put the needs of others above your own desires.
Closing Prayer…
Heavenly Father, I’ve lived for myself and my own selfish desires and wants for too long. Change my heart, O God, and let me follow the example of Christ, who made Himself of no reputation, became as a servant, and humbled Himself – even to the point of death. I ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
