“TRUSTING IN CHARIOTS AND HORSES”
(Isaiah 29:1 – 31:9)
“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the LORD!” – Isaiah 31:1
The prophet Isaiah speaks of people who trust in chariots and horses – at that time, the strongest method of travel available, and a sign of military strength. David reflects this thought in Psalm 20:7, stating “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
We may not be “trusting in chariots and horses” today – but the implication is the same for us. Are we trusting in God, or in the world and the flesh. Perhaps an accurate translation/application of the passage for our time would be “Some trust in their armed forces and nuclear weapons, but we trust in the name of the Lord.”
Where is your trust today? In a political party? In our government? In your job? In your salary? In your physical health? I don’t have to tell you that all of those things can change in a nano-second! But, we need to determine that our trust will not be in the things of this world, but exclusively in the Lord!
Simple Truth:
At times it may be easy to grow comfortable in our life’s situation and circumstances. However, our trust is in nothing of this world, but rather in the Lord alone!
Reflections and Application:
- It is easy to become comfortable with the things in this life. But, remember that everything in this life is very brief – focus instead on the eternal! (Psalm 103:15-16)
- You want to truly be blessed, then trust in the Lord, not the things of this world! (Proverbs 16:20)
- The apostle Paul had many accomplishments in life, but he considered them all rubbish! His desire should be our desire – to gain Christ! (Philippians 3:7-8)
Closing Prayer…
Heavenly Father, help me to focus on You and on eternity, and not to look at the things around me. It is all too easy to become comfortable as well as careless here – or to feel depressed and dejected here. I will trust in You, knowing that You will never leave nor forsake me, and shall supply all my need! In Jesus’ name, amen.
