“TURNING HEARTS; BUILDING GOD’S ETERNAL LEGACY TOGETHER”
(Isaiah 63:1 – 66:24)
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people a joy.” – Isaiah 65:17-18
Last August at our SCUBA Summer Adventure, I watched something extraordinary unfold. A couple in their seventies, volunteered to lead a group of energetic preschoolers. What amazed me wasn’t their stamina, but their heart. During worship time, their weathered hands would clap with such genuine joy that every four and five-year-old wanted to sing louder. When the little ones achieved something simple like playing one of the games, they celebrated like they’d won an Olympic medal—and their faces absolutely glowed. When two children argued, the wise leader knelt down with the patience only decades of wisdom can bring, helping them work through it in a way that taught both kindness and problem-solving. By week’s end, these children had experienced something profound: unconditional love from spiritual grandparents. When kids were picked up, a dad marveled, “I’ve never seen strangers love a child like their own. What makes people do that?”
Isaiah’s final chapters paint a stunning picture of God’s ultimate restoration plan—new heavens and a new earth where generations flourish together in joy. This isn’t just about eternity; it’s about God’s heart for intergenerational partnership in building His kingdom now. The prophet Malachi echoes this vision, promising that God will “turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:6). This divine heart-turning creates the foundation for spiritual legacy that spans generations.
Jesus perfectly embodied this intergenerational ministry. He welcomed children when others dismissed them (Mark 10:14), honored elderly believers like Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25-38), and created spiritual family bonds that transcended age barriers. In Christ, we see that God’s redemption plan includes every generation working together to advance His kingdom. The Holy Spirit empowers these relationships, knitting hearts together across age gaps to create something beautiful and evangelistically powerful.
The urgency of Isaiah’s vision should compel us to action. God’s eternal plan isn’t just individual salvation—it’s GENERATIONAL TRANSFORMATION that flows from spiritual parents to spiritual children. When unchurched neighbors witness authentic love between generations in our church family, they see a glimpse of God’s new creation breaking into the present. Children thrive when surrounded by multiple spiritual mentors, and older believers find renewed purpose when investing in the next generation.
This passage challenges us to examine our ministry silos. Are we creating opportunities for elders to mentor younger children? Are we intentionally connecting young families with spiritual grandparents? The Holy Spirit wants to turn hearts toward each other, creating legacy relationships that reflect God’s eternal kingdom. When we invest in Next Gen ministry, we’re not just babysitting—we’re partnering with God’s restoration plan for all creation.
Consider practical steps to build intergenerational connections: adopt a spiritual grandparent or grandchild, participate in family ministry events across age groups, or join a serving team in Next Gen ministry as a wisdom-giver rather than just a helper.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your eternal plan of restoration that includes every generation. Turn our hearts toward each other as You promised through Malachi. Holy Spirit, break down the walls that separate us by age and create beautiful mentoring relationships that reflect Christ’s love. Help our church become a place where spiritual grandparents and grandchildren find each other, creating legacy connections that draw unchurched families into Your eternal kingdom. May we live today with eternity in view, investing in relationships that will echo through generations. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
