“HOW LONG, O LORD?”
(Habakkuk 1:1 – 3:19; Jeremiah 25:1-38)

“Must I forever see this sin and misery all around me? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight.” – Habakkuk 1:3

What a day we live in! There is so much division in our nation today, not simply political, but on nearly every area of discussion! Also, there have been so many weather disruptions, from devastating floods to hurricanes and tornadoes, in locations that have not previously known such disaster. Habakkuk’s words of seeing destruction and violence, and being surrounded by people to love to argue and fight, could have just as easily been written today!

And, like Habakkuk, we may be crying out to God, asking Him, “How long, O Lord, must I call for help?” And all too often, it seems as though God doesn’t listen.

But, we need to understand that God IS in control! His times and His ways are in His hands, not on our timetable! It’s easy for us, like Habakkuk, to become frustrated – and perhaps even be tempted to throw up our hands in despair. 

Know this, my friend, that God has not forgotten you, and He knows your situation! No matter what things seem like today, we must reflect Habakkuk’s determination, saying, “yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. The Sovereign LORD is my strength!” (Habakkuk 3:18-19)

Simple Truth: Every one of us will endure difficult times. It is during those moments that the enemy tries to discourage us. But, we must recognize that God is an ever-present help in our time of need. Don’t quit! Don’t give up! Stay strong in Him!

Reflections & Application: 

• During difficult times, discipline yourself to focus on the goodness of God, and reflect on His blessings.

   

• If you encounter someone who is discouraged and depressed, make it a priority to reach out to them and to share a word of encouragement, as led by His Holy Spirit.

   

• Know that God indeed causes ALL things to work together for the good of them who love Him and are called by His name. You may not see it or understand it today, but know that today’s trial will become tomorrow’s testimony!

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I know You are a good God, a righteous God, and no good thing will You withhold from me as I walk in Your will and Your way. No matter whether today brings joy or sorrow, I acknowledge that You are going to us it and me in it for Your glory! I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen!
