AUGUST 17 – Reading 229

“DESTRUCTION OR DISCIPLINE”
(Jeremiah 30:1 – 31:40; Daniel 3:1-30)

“For I am with you and will save you, says the LORD. I will completely destroy the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not destroy you. But I must discipline you; I cannot let you go unpunished.” – Jeremiah 30:11

Much of the book of Jeremiah is focused on the disobedience of Israel, as well as its destruction and captivity into the hands of Babylon. But, the focus somewhat shifts toward the future in today’s assigned reading – in fact eschatological future. God promises to bring Israel back home, and that He will destroy the nations where they were held captive. God says He will NOT destroy Israel – but rather, He must discipline them. He must punish them.

As hard as that word is, we recognize its truth as parents! If our children disobey us, of course, we won’t destroy them! But, we wouldn’t be good parents if we didn’t discipline them. Parents who fail to discipline their children create adults who will fail to live up to their best.

Similarly, if we disobey God, know that He will not destroy us – we are His children. But, He can – and will – discipline us!

Simple Truth:
What choices are you making in your life today? Make good choices! Know that “the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes each one He accepts as His child.” (Hebrews 12:6)

Reflections & Application:

  • If you have walked in a way that is contrary to God’s will, don’t confuse God’s discipline as the work of the enemy.

  • No one likes to be disciplined! The best way to avoid discipline is to make wise choices and not enter into temptation!

Closing Prayer:
Lord, so very often I know I have failed You and walked outside of Your perfect will for my life. Help me today to not swerve to the left or to the right, and to follow steadfastly as You lead me! I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
