“FINDING FAVOR IN THE EYES OF THE LORD”
(Genesis 6:9 – 9:29)
In the fall of 2024, I preached a sermon series called “Stand Out,” highlighting Old Testament saints who stood out in their generation. I began with Abraham and moved forward in time with each new example. Today’s portion of Scripture reminded me of Noah, who stood out in his generation. Without Noah, there would not have been any of the heroes of the faith I shared in the series, nor any of us.
But how did Noah save his family and us? Here are key lessons we can draw from Noah’s life, along with guidance on how to apply them to see our families saved and persevere in our God-given calling:
- Faith in God’s Word (Genesis 6:9-22)
Noah believed God’s warning about the coming flood even though it hadn’t rained yet. His faith wasn’t based on immediate evidence, but on trust in God’s word. Like Noah, we must have unwavering faith in God’s promises, even when they seem far off or improbable.
- Obedience Despite Public Opinion (Hebrews 11:7)
Noah built the ark for decades, enduring ridicule from those around him. He focused on obedience to God’s instructions, not the opinions of others. Likewise, we must remain obedient even if the world mocks us.
- Perseverance in the Face of Opposition (2 Peter 2:5)
Noah is called a “preacher of righteousness,” yet not a single person outside his family heeded his warnings. Still, he continued his work without wavering. We can look to Noah’s example of perseverance when we face resistance, whether indifference or outright hostility. We are not responsible for how people respond to God’s message; our role is to faithfully proclaim it and keep doing what He has asked of us.
- Family Salvation Through Leadership and Example (Genesis 7:1)
Noah’s family was saved because of his faithfulness. He led them in obedience to God, preparing the ark for their safety. We can help ensure the spiritual well-being of our family by leading them in faith, modeling godliness, and pointing them to Christ.
- Trusting God with the Outcome (Genesis 6:17-18)
Noah trusted God to bring the flood and save him and his family through the ark. We must trust God with the outcome of our obedience. We know God is faithful in fulfilling His promises, even when we don’t see immediate results.
- Living Righteously in a Corrupt World (Genesis 6:9)
Noah was described as “blameless among the people of his time,” living in righteousness despite being surrounded by wickedness. Even in a world filled with evil and violence, we are called to live lives that reflect God’s righteousness. We can be a light in dark places by standing apart in our actions, values, and love for others.
- God’s Grace in the Midst of Judgment (Genesis 6:8)
Noah found grace in God’s eyes. His obedience and faith resulted in divine favor, which led to his salvation. In a world where judgment is inevitable, we must rely on God’s grace for our salvation and the ability to carry out His will. Through Christ, we find that same grace that can save us and our families when we turn to Him in faith.
I pray that you will remain faithful even when everyone else is not!
Reflection and Application:
- Are you willing to do what is necessary to see your family escape God’s judgment and wrath?
- Why is it so hard to stand firm when others mock or don’t believe what you believe?
- As Christians, why is it essential to live in the grace and favor afforded to us through Jesus?
Prayer:
Father, as we reflect on the lessons of faith and perseverance we understand from Noah’s life, help us trust in Your Word, even when the world around us doubts. Grant us the strength to remain obedient, no matter the ridicule or resistance we face.
Lord, we pray for our families so that they, too, may come to know You and be saved. May we lead them with love and righteousness, modeling a life of faith that draws them closer to You. Empower us to persevere in the work You’ve called us to, trusting that You are faithful to bring about the outcome in Your perfect time.
I appreciate your grace, which sustains us even in difficulty. Let our lives be a witness to Your goodness and Your power to save. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
