OCTOBER 31 – Reading 304

“WHEREVER YOU GO”
(Matthew 8:19-22; Luke 9:51-62; John 7:1-52 (additional reading: John 7:53 – 8:11))

“As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’”  – Luke 9:57 (ESV)

You’ve probably heard someone say it in a movie, “I’ll go wherever you go.”  It’s the kind of line that makes your heart skip a beat (or at least it does for me). It speaks of deep love, loyalty, and the kind of commitment that doesn’t break when things get hard. We hear it in romantic stories, but it’s also the kind of devotion Jesus invites us into.  Not just words spoken in emotion, but a life lived in trust.

In Luke 9, we see this man make that bold declaration to Jesus. But Jesus doesn’t respond with excitement, He responds with honesty. He explains that following Him means giving up comfort and certainty. “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Luke 9:58, ESV). Jesus had no home.  He had no place to rest. He was walking toward sacrifice, not ease. And He wanted the man to understand, this journey isn’t about convenience it’s about surrender!

We often say we’ll follow Jesus, but when the path gets difficult or unfamiliar, we hesitate. Yet true love and true faith doesn’t wait for ideal conditions. It steps forward, hand in hand with the One who leads. Like a child trusting a parent in a crowd, we don’t need to know every detail. We just need to know who we’re walking with.

Simple Truth:
Following Jesus means choosing closeness over comfort, trusting Him more than the path ahead.

Reflections:

  • Are there areas in your life where you’ve hesitated to follow Jesus fully?
  • What would it look like to say “yes” to Him today, even if the road feels uncertain?

Application:

  • Ask Jesus to help you let go of comfort and choose trust.
  • Stay close to Him, even when the journey is unclear.

Closing Prayer:
Jesus, I want to follow You wherever You go. Help me not just say the words, but live them. Teach me to trust You more than I trust my plans. Lead me in love, and give me courage to walk with You, even when the way is hard.  In Your name, Amen.
