”AUTHORITY AND ALLEGIANCE: RENDER TO GOD WHAT IS GOD’S”
(Matthew 21:23–22:22; Mark 11:27–12:17; Luke 20:1–26)

“Jesus said, ‘Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.’” — Luke 20:25 (NLT)

Throughout these passages, Jesus’ authority is challenged again and again. The religious leaders demanded to know by what authority He taught and healed, yet their question revealed hearts unwilling to surrender. In response, Jesus exposed their hypocrisy and reminded them that true authority comes from God alone.

Later, when asked about paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus pointed to a coin stamped with Caesar’s image and delivered a timeless truth: “Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Earthly obligations matter, but our ultimate allegiance belongs to the One whose image we bear (Genesis 1:27). We live within our culture, yet we are called to be set apart — to honor authority without letting it shape our identity. Though we may live among many systems and voices, our loyalty to Christ must speak louder. We are in the world, but not of it; our identity is found in Him alone.

To “render to God what is God’s” means to give Him what already belongs to Him — our worship, our obedience, our heart, our life. Living under His authority is not bondage; it’s freedom. When we fully surrender to the Lordship of Christ, we live with integrity, peace, and purpose. Everything we have, everything we are, and everything we do is an act of worship back to Him.

Simple Truth:
All authority belongs to God. Real faith gives Him our full allegiance — not just our words, but our whole lives.

• What areas of my life have I tried to keep under my own control instead of surrendering to God’s authority?

   

• Does my daily life reflect allegiance to the One whose image I bear?

   

Application:

• Acknowledge God’s authority over every part of your life — thoughts, time, and priorities.

   

• Live with integrity in both earthly and spiritual responsibilities (Rom. 13:1–2).

   

• Remember that your life bears God’s image; let your actions reflect His character.

   

• Worship not only with your lips but through obedience and surrender.

   

Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are the rightful King over my life. Teach me to honor authority while keeping my ultimate allegiance to You. Help me to give You what is Yours — my heart, my will, and my worship. May my life reflect Your image and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
