“ANOTHER HELPER”
(Matthew 26:26-35; Mark 14:22-31; Luke 22:17-20, 31-38; John 13:31-16:4)
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever” – John 14:15-16
Have you ever been busy on some difficult project, and wish you just had someone to assist you? A second set of hands… someone to work with you… even just someone to give words of advice or encouragement. I know I have been there!
And here’s the good news – you never have to go through anything in this life all by yourself! Jesus has promised you “another helper”! Jesus has promised to not leave us all alone. We are not “orphans” (John 14:18). He promised to send the Holy Spirit, and that promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost.
Here are some truths from our text in John 14 that are critical to understand about this promise:
- We must keep His commandments! (:15; :21; :23) The promise of the Holy Spirit to be your helper has a requirement of keeping His commands! You can’t live an ungodly, disobedient life and think that the Holy Spirit will wink at it!
- The Holy Spirit leads you in truth! (:17; :26) His way is THE true way! And He will teach you in His way, and bring into your remembrance the truths He teaches!
- You can do “greater works! (:12-14) Because Jesus has sent “another Helper,” we can do far more than Jesus could alone during His time on this planet! Greater because Jesus is with the Father, and this “Helper,” the Holy Spirit, dwells within ALL believers, gifting each of us as we do His will!
Simple Truth:
As we obey the Word of God, and allow the Spirit of God to move within us, God can and will do great things in our life!
Reflections & Application:
- Are you daily walking in obedience to God’s commands? The hundreds of “little decisions” you make each day are far more critical than the occasional “big decisions” you may make!
- Are you trying to “do it your way” all the time? Allow “another helper” in your life, and walk and work in His power, not your own!
- The baptism in the Holy Spirit is FAR more than a one-time experience, and far more important than just what you experience in a special church service. It is to allow you to live 365, 24-7 in His power!
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I pray that today – and every day – You will continually fill me with Your Holy Spirit, that I might walk and talk under the empowerment that only You can provide. I don’t want to settle for living in my own abilities – I need Your empowerment. I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
