“YOUR CROSS, HIS STRENGTH”
(Mathew 27:31-56; Mark 15:21-41; Luke 23:26-49; John 19:16b-30)
“As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him, to carry behind Jesus.” – Luke 23:26
We all carry a cross. No, not a wooden one like Jesus carried. The “cross” we carry is the heavy burden of our lives. It might be a long-term sickness, a painful family problem, a struggle with a bad habit, or the constant stress of finances. Life gives us burdens that are often too heavy for us to carry alone.
In our Scripture today, we see Jesus on His way to be crucified. He was already beaten and weak. He was carrying the heavy wooden beam of His cross, but He could not make it. The Roman soldiers, wanting to speed things up, grabbed a man named Simon of Cyrene. They forced him to carry Jesus’s cross behind Him.
This moment teaches us a few powerful truths about the burdens we carry:
1. Jesus knows the cross you carry: He knows your burden, your struggle, and your pain. How? Because He carried it on the cross. He walked that agonizing path. He felt the splinters, the weight, and your shame.
2. He knows the weight of your cross: Jesus wasn’t just walking with a piece of wood; He was carrying the sin of the world. He knows exactly what it feels like to be completely weighed down, even to the point of collapse. Whatever you’re going through, He understands the pressure you are under
3. Jesus wants to carry your cross: The soldiers forced Simon to help Jesus, but the greater truth is that Jesus wants to willingly help us. He doesn’t want us to struggle alone until we collapse. He tells us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me” (Matthew 11:28-29). A “yoke” is a piece of wood that joins two animals for pulling a load; Jesus says, “Yoke yourselves to Me.” He wants to stand beside you and take the main weight of your struggle.
The cross you carry is real, but it doesn’t have to break you. Don’t carry it in front of Jesus; carry it behind Him, letting Him lead, and letting Him take the full, crushing weight of it.
Simple Truth:
Jesus, who carried His own cross, understands your heavy burden and wants to carry it with you.

- What is the specific burden (your cross) that feels heaviest to you right now?
- How does it change your perspective to know that Jesus fully understands the weight and pain of your burden
Application:
- Cast your anxiety and stress onto Jesus today. The Bible says He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
- Pray and ask Jesus to help you carry your cross by giving Him the biggest part of the load.
- Trust Him to walk beside you, remembering that His strength is perfect when yours fails.
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for knowing what it’s like to be weary and burdened. I confess that my cross is too heavy for me today. I lift it up to You. Please take my anxiety and stress and carry them for me. Help me to walk behind You, trusting Your strength to get me through this. Thank You for never leaving me to carry my burdens alone. Amen.
