“THE THREE ‘B’s”
(Exodus 24:1 – 26:37)
Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.” – Exodus 24:7-8
I remember it like it was yesterday! I was just a young man, talking to an elderly pastor, and fastened on his every word, drinking it in like cold water on a hot day. What he told me was very simple, but deeply impacted me. He said that he preached and practiced “the three “b’s.” As I looked at him, he recognized that I didn’t quite grasp what he was saying, so he clarified what these three b’s were – the Bible, the Blood, and the Blessed Hope!
These three things must be the focus of our life and ministry! First, what does the Bible say? His Word is first and foremost in every decision we make. Second, being covered by His Blood! As the old hymn says, “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!” Third, we need to live every day looking up, in expectance of Christ’s soon return – the Blessed Hope!
After spending time in the presence of God, Moses rehearsed God’s Word to the people. And he sprinkled the “blood of the covenant” on the people, foreshadowing Jesus’ blood sacrifice for us on the cross. They were looking ahead to the Promised Land, not citizens of the desert they were currently occupying.
It’s all too easy to become focused on our present life situation, but we must be encouraged to “look up, for our redemption draws near!” No matter how difficult this life’s details may become, we must recognize we are the children of God, and this world is not our home!
Let’s pray…
Lord, help me not to become so focused on the world around me that I minimize the eternity ahead of me! May I prioritize spending time in Your Word and in Your presence each and every day. Help me to live my life for You and in Your Will in every decision and action I take.
