“THE GOD WHO CALLS THE WORLD TO REPENT!”
(Revelation 13:1 – 16:21)

Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”— Revelation 16:1

As a child, I was hard-headed (sometimes I still am! 😊).  If told not to touch, well, I touched.  If told not to … I did.  I guess I had to try it myself.  Add to that, the sentiment “Nobody tells me what to do”, and I had “learn the hard way” the error of ignoring loving advice. 

As a Pastor, I have watched many people ignore, warning after warning, heading for disaster, and nothing said could wake them up. That’s Revelation 13–16—only on a global scale.

Over the years, I’ve learned that sometimes God’s mercy looks like comfort.  But more often, God’s mercy looks like confrontation.  The final judgments show both.

Wretched Religion – Warnings – Wrath

1. The Rise of Antichrist and the False Prophet (Revelation 13)
   In chapter 13, we see the rejection of Christ Jesus and the acceptance of an imitation of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Satan forms an unholy trinity—dragon, beast, false prophet. Together, deception, political dominance, religious coercion, and economic control persuade humanity to turn against God and worship an evil facsimile disguised as a world savior. This is humanity’s rebellion matured.

2. Angelic Warnings (Revelation 14)
   Before judgment falls, God sends three warnings:

• • Fear God and give Him glory.
  • Babylon will fall.
  • Do not take the mark of the beast.

Even in wrath, grace still calls.  God’s will is that none would perish, yet when the world rejects God’s grace on a global scale, his judgment and wrath are commiserate in scale.  Over and over God calls out to humanity to repent – turn to Him for forgiveness and acceptance and live in His love and blessing through obedience and worship.  Time and time again, we reject Him and His love.

3. The Bowls of Wrath (Revelation 16)
   Following the warnings, God fulfills his promise to pour out his wrath.  Revelation 16 lays out the most severe judgments in Scripture:

• • Painful sores
  • The seas turned to blood
  • Rivers turned to blood
  • Scorching heat
  • Darkness
  • Dried Euphrates
  • The final earthquake

Following these judgments, we are told the most telling information about our fallen race: “They did not repent.”  The issue is not judgment—it is human hardness.  

For the Christ follower, we live an abundant life through a surrendered heart.  But for those outside of His blessing, they live a life of rebellion to the truth. They would rather face judgment than acknowledge Jesus as the Sovereign King. 

In rebellion, they will never choose to live according to the design of their creator. We see this rebellion today in the rejection of sexual identity, sexual perversion, selfishness, and the failure to acknowledge and follow God’s boundaries. They violate others, commit self-harm, and reject His Son, Jesus, and His teachings. Because of these attitudes and behaviors, Scripture tells us that, as a society, we live under the wrath of God, even now expressed in societal dysfunction. This pattern of rebellion, followed by God’s wrath, will escalate. 

Key Thought:
God’s judgments reveal His holiness and expose humanity’s stubbornness, calling us to respond now—not later.

Applications:

• Let Scripture shape your urgency.  You’ve read the entire Bible this year—don’t lose your sense of mission.

• Repentance must stay central. A soft heart is the mark of a Spirit-filled life.

• Share the gospel while there is time. Revelation isn’t about fear—it’s about invitation.

Reflection Questions:

• In what ways am I rebelling/disobedient to Jesus and His teachings?

• Where is God calling me to more profound repentance?

• Who in my life needs the gospel before it’s too late?

• How can I become more one/intimate with Jesus?

Closing Prayer:
Father, keep my heart soft. Let Your Word awaken me, not harden me. Make me urgent for others who still need Christ. Help me walk in repentance, readiness, and intimacy with Jesus. Let me live outside your wrath and in your blessing/abundance. Amen.
