“GET DRESSED!”
(Exodus 27:1 – 29:46)
And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood. These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons to serve me as priests. – Exodus 28:2-4
We certainly live in an interesting time! In years gone by, folks would come to church dressed in their “Sunday best!” When travelling by air, it was most common for men to wear suits and ties, and ladies to wear dresses. When I began in the ministry, it was customary for ministers to wear a coat and tie every day. In fact, when in Bible College, one of my professors said that if he was working on his car, and needed to go to the auto parts store, he would go change clothes into a suit and tie before going to the store!
Recently, things changed in many workplaces to “casual Friday.” That has evolved to more casual attire every day. And, that includes in church!
While there could be much discussion on what people wear to work or to church, we actually need to think less legalistically about physical attire, and focus more on our spiritual attire! How are you clothed spiritually? It’s time to get dressed!
In Isaiah 61:3 we are encouraged to “put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness!” In the New Testament, we are told “not to let our adorning be external, but rather the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.” (1 Peter 3:3-4). We need to “clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12-14)
It surely is important to dress modestly, but it is even more important to be clothed spiritually! We are representing Christ in everything we do!
Let’s pray…
Today, I make a purposeful decision to “get dressed” in a way that reflects my relationship with the Lord. Father, as I look in the mirror, let me be careful to examine my “spiritual attire” more than my physical attire! May others notice my spiritual clothing even more than the way I appear to their eyes.
