APRIL 6 – Reading 96

“TRUSTING GOD IN DESPERATE TIMES”
(1 Samuel 21:1-15; Psalms 34:1-22; 56:1-13; 1 Samuel 22:1-23; Psalms 52:1-9)

“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”  —  Psalm 34:1

Have you ever wondered what someone from the Bible might say about a situation or challenge they faced? If we could interview David during a difficult season of his life, I believe he would share the following:

“I was anointed to be king, yet here I am—running for my life. Saul wants me dead; my people cannot provide shelter, and now I have fled to enemy territory. Desperate, I pretend to be insane before the Philistine king to survive. If he thinks I’m sane, he will surely kill me. Acting like a slobbering fool has cost me my dignity, but my faith remains intact. In my lowest moment, I discovered something profound: even in fear, God is faithful. Even in trouble, He delivers.”

God had already chosen David, but his path to the throne was anything but smooth. Saul, filled with jealousy, hunted him down, forcing David to flee for his life. With nowhere else to go, he did the unthinkable—he ran to Gath, the city of Goliath, the very enemy he had once defeated (1 Samuel 21:10).

But as soon as he arrived, he realized his mistake. The Philistines recognized him—the mighty warrior of Israel. Fear gripped his heart, and in desperation, he pretended to be insane, letting saliva run down his beard and scribbling on the city gate. The ruse worked. King Achish dismissed him as a madman, and David escaped.

Yet, from this humiliating experience, David did not write a song of despair but a song of praise. Psalm 34 is his testimony—declaring that even in trouble, God is near; even in fear, God is faithful.

What David Learned About God:

  1. God is worthy of praise at all times (Psalm 34:1). Even in difficulty, worship shifts our focus from fear to faith.
  2. God hears and delivers those who seek Him (Psalm 34:4). When David cried out, God answered.
  3. God protects and provides (Psalm 34:7-10). Even in the wilderness, David learned that those who fear the Lord lack nothing.
  4. Fear of man must be replaced by fear of God (Psalm 34:9). Instead of fearing Saul or the Philistines, David learned to trust in God’s provision and protection.

New Testament Connection:

  • Matthew 5:3-4“Blessed are the poor in spirit… blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (David’s brokenness led to greater dependence on God.)
  • Philippians 4:6-7“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (David’s testimony reminds us that prayer leads to peace.)
  • 2 Timothy 1:7“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love, and self-control.” (David learned that faith overcomes fear.)

Simple Truth:
Troubles will come, but God is always near. When we seek Him, He delivers. When we trust Him, we lack nothing.

Reflection & Application:

  • Where is Fear Controlling You? Like David, are you making desperate decisions out of fear? How can you shift your focus to trust in God?
  • Are You Praising in the Storm? David learned to bless the Lord at all times. Can you praise God even in hardship?
  • Do You Believe God Provides? David declared that those who fear the Lord lack nothing. Do you trust God to meet your needs, even in difficult seasons?

Closing Prayer…
Father, in moments of fear and uncertainty, help me trust in You. Teach me to seek You first, knowing You hear and deliver me. May my heart be filled with praise, even in trials, and may I walk in faith, not fear. Thank You for being my refuge and provider. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
