“THE PASSING OF TIME”
(Deuteronomy 31:30 – 34:12 & Psalm 90:1-17)
“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12 (NIV)
I used to be young! It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when I was quite discouraged as well as disabled by my youth! For better or worse, I have always looked a bit younger than my actual age. So, I was regularly challenged by those around me, as they thought me to be “too young” to be in a position of leadership, or to express thoughts or ideas about something.
I can only begin to imagine what Moses experienced throughout his life. Emerging from a place of exile, He came into leadership among the people of Israel. His words were looked at with disdain. But, He became the leader of Israel as they departed Egypt, and traveled through the wilderness en route to the promised land.
And now, in the final chapters of Deuteronomy, we read his final words to the people. He was no longer young, but 120 years old! And the wisdom he shares was required to be not only heard, but followed by Israel.
There is a fairly common phrase I have heard many times – “We grow too soon old, and too late smart!” I certainly wish I knew and applied to my life the things I know now, when I was much younger! And, more than that, may we all live today by the Biblical truths we now know!
Simple Truth:
It’s not just knowing God’s Word that is important… it is DOING what we know God’s will is!
Reflections:
- What is keeping you from putting into practice the things you know that God would have you to do?
- When we are young it sometimes seems like time moves very slowly. As we get older, time seems to fly by. I distinctly recall hearing one of my elderly leaders say this about getting older – “The days are long, the years are short.”
Application:
- The Bible tells us to hide God’s Word in our heart so that we don’t sin. Are you taking time to treasure the Word of God in your heart?
- My spiritual father regularly reminded me of this truth – “You can’t know anything more of the will of God than you know of the Word of God.”
- Other than your salvation, know that time is your most precious gift. Everything else can be replaced, but time wasted is never regained.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me to learn Your Word, to live Your Word, and to value the moments and days You have given me to live for You on purpose! In Jesus’ name, amen!
