APRIL 11 – Reading 101

“HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN”
(1 Samuel 31:1-13; 1 Chronicles 10:1-14; 2 Samuel 1:1-27; Psalm 5:1-12)

 

So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. – 1 Chronicles 10:13-14

 

The trajectory to success and fame often follows a familiar pattern: a period of ascent, reaching a pinnacle of achievement, followed by a decline that sometimes culminates in a dramatic and untimely end. This pattern is particularly prevalent among individuals who possess exceptional talent, a stroke of luck, or a combination of both.

In the entertainment industry, numerous figures have embodied this pattern, their untimely deaths often revealing long-standing self-destructive behaviors that contributed to their demise. The initial shock and disbelief surrounding their passing frequently give way to revelations of substance abuse, mental health struggles, or a reckless lifestyle that ultimately led to their downfall.

This pattern of ascent, peak, and decline is not limited to the realm of entertainment. It can be observed in various fields, including politics, business, sports, and even religious leaders. Individuals who achieve great success may become blinded by their achievements, leading to hubris, isolation, and a disconnect from reality. The pressure to maintain their position at the top can also take a toll on their mental and physical well-being.

King Saul serves as a tragic example of this pattern. He was a good-looking man who was a head taller than anyone else among the Israelites (1 Samuel 9:2). Since he looked like he would make a great king, God gave him to Israel to be their king. But Saul’s rapid rise to power was followed by a series of poor decisions, disobedience, and a descent into madness. Today’s text points to the root cause as a breach of faith.  His story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride, the corrupting influence of power, and the importance of maintaining humility and seeking guidance. Let’s not become another of whom it is said, “How the mighty have fallen!”

Application
Maintaining faith can be challenging during both successes and failures. Failure can lead to questioning or doubt, while success can lead to pride and a sense of self-reliance.   

Reflection
There are three perspectives given in our readings on who initiated Saul’s death: Saul himself in a self-inflicted wound (1 Sam. 31), the Lord (1 Chron. 10), and the Amalekite (2 Sam. 1), who likely lied in hopes of getting a reward. How do these perspectives give a fuller perspective on death?

Closing Prayer…
Dear God, thank you for your guidance and love. Help us recognize pride’s danger and the corrupting influence of power and success. Keep us humble and seeking your guidance through life’s ups and downs. Protect us from blindness through achievements or isolation through failures. Fill our hearts with gratitude and hope, and teach us what it means to die well.

We pray for those lost to the trappings of success, that they may find redemption in you. Help us remember Saul’s example, and teach us to walk in faith and obedience.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
