“CONFIDENCE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD”
(Psalm 27:1-14; 28:1-9; 30:1-12; 31:1-24)

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”— Psalm 27:1

As a three-year-old, I was terrified of storms.  Whenever lightning flashed, and the thunder rang, I ran to my parents for comfort and protection.  I could not face the storm alone, but I was no longer afraid in my parent’s presence.  What do you do when fear knocks at the door? When uncertainty creeps in, and enemies seem to rise on every side? In Psalm 27, David gives us a clear answer: he runs to the presence of God. Not only does he find strength—he finds peace, clarity, and hope. And so can you. This psalm is a call to confident worship, even when life is falling apart.

David begins this psalm with bold declarations of faith. Surrounded by threats and opposition, he reminds himself—and us—that God is his light, his salvation, and his stronghold.

• Light – God brings clarity when things are confusing.
• Salvation – God is our rescuer, even when we can’t save ourselves.
• Stronghold – God is our safe place, even in chaos.

David isn’t living in denial—he acknowledges enemies, trouble, and danger (v. 2-3). But his trust is greater than his fear. His heart is set on one thing above all else:

“One thing have I asked of the Lord… that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life…” (v. 4)

He doesn’t ask for victory, comfort, or safety first—he asks for God’s presence. David knew that when you have God, you already have everything you need.

As the psalm continues, David expresses both confidence and vulnerability. He cries out for God’s mercy, asks for guidance, and pleads, “Do not hide Your face from me” (v. 9). Faith doesn’t mean we never feel afraid—it means we know where to go when fear arises.

New Testament Connection:

• John 8:12 — Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” (Jesus is the light David longed for—our guide in darkness.)

   

• Romans 8:31 — “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (David’s confidence in God becomes our confidence in Christ.)

   

• Hebrews 4:16 — “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace.” (We now have access to God’s presence through Jesus.)

David’s Example of Worship and Confidence:

• Start with God, Not the Problem – David doesn’t begin with fear—he begins with who God is (v. 1). Start your day by declaring God’s truth over your situation.

   

• Make God’s Presence Your Priority – “One thing I ask…” David longed for intimacy with God above all else (v. 4). Is that your first pursuit?

   

• Worship Through the Battle – David said he would sing and make melody even when enemies surrounded him (v. 6). Worship silences fear and builds faith.

   

• Seek God’s Face, Not Just His Hand – David’s prayer wasn’t just about getting help—it was about knowing God more deeply (v. 8).

   

• Ask for Guidance in Uncertainty – David ends with a plea: “Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me…” (v. 11). God is not just a refuge—He’s a guide.

Simple Truth:
God’s presence is our greatest protection, and our most profound peace. When fear rises, run to the Lord—your light, your salvation, and your stronghold.

• What fears or challenges are you facing right now? Write them down, then speak Psalm 27:1 over them.
• Are you seeking God’s presence or just His protection?
• How can you make worship a part of your battle strategy this week?

Closing Prayer:
Lord, You are my light and my salvation. You are my stronghold. I will not be afraid. Help me to seek You first—not just for help, but for who You are. Teach me to worship in the middle of the storm and to walk confidently in Your presence. Lead me, Lord, and I will follow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
