“IF IT HADN’T BEEN FOR THE LORD”
(Psalms 124:1-8; 131:1-3; 133:1-3; 138:1-8; 139:1-24)
“If the LORD had not been on our side—let Israel now say— if the LORD had not been on our side…” – Psalm 124:1-2
I’ve heard some folks say, when looking at someone in a bad situation, “There but for the grace of God go I.” The statement is meant to be one of humility, acknowledging that their position of fortune, in comparison to the one they are looking at, is not due to their own abilities, but rather, due to the work of God.
While that phrase may sound a bit flippant and condescending at times, I can tell you from personal experience that it is the absolute truth. When I consider some of the most horrendous experiences of my life, and think about how things may have turned out, I can tell you that God is able to take even what the enemy means for harm and use it for good! (Genesis 50:20)
The Psalmist speaks of when the people rose up against him in anger. He mentions about flood waters rising around him. He mentions about being torn apart and being trapped. But, the good news is that he was set free! And, he concludes that his help is from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth. He is your help, too!
Simple Truth:
No matter how bleak your situation may seem at the moment, God is your help, and He is able to deliver you!
Reflections:
Are you feeling down and discouraged? Take heart, and keep your focus on the Lord! He is an ever-present help in your time of need!
Application:
- Look down! Be aware of your situation, but don’t make that your focus!
- Look up! No matter what is going on, keep your eyes on Jesus!
- Look ahead! Know that God knows your tomorrow better than you know your today, and He is already there, preparing the way for you!
Closing Prayer:
Father, I make a choice to look to You, and not to this world and the circumstances we are in. I acknowledge that You are in control, and that You have a plan and a purpose for me today and tomorrow! I choose to trust in You! I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen!
