“FRUITLESS RELIGION VS. LIVING FAITH”
(Matthew 21:1–22; Mark 11:1–25; Luke 19:29–48; John 12:1, 9–50)

Seeing a fig tree by the road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then He said to it, ‘May you never bear fruit again!’ Immediately the tree withered.” — Matthew 21:19

On His way to Jerusalem, Jesus saw a fig tree covered in leaves but empty of fruit. It was a picture of outward religion without inward life—impressive from a distance, barren up close. Soon after, He entered the temple and drove out those who had turned worship into business. Both moments exposed the same truth: God desires genuine faith that bears fruit, not empty appearance.

Living faith is not about looking alive but being alive in Christ. It shows itself through obedience, humility, and love. When we stay rooted in Jesus, His life flows through us, and spiritual fruit follows naturally (John 15:5). The withered tree warns us that religious performance without real relationship will never satisfy the heart of God.

Simple Truth:
Faith that looks alive but bears no fruit is lifeless. True faith abides in Christ and produces the fruit of obedience.

Reflections:

  • What kind of “fruit” is my faith producing right now?

  • Am I cultivating real relationship with Jesus or simply maintaining routine?

Application:

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where your walk has grown superficial.

  • Spend daily time in prayer and Scripture so your roots stay nourished.

  • Let your actions—not just your words—show your faith to others.

Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep me from fruitless religion. Let my faith be alive, growing, and bearing fruit for Your glory. Help me to walk with You in humility and sincerity so that my life reflects Your heart. Amen.
