“SINGING IN THE FACE OF TROUBLE”
(1 Samuel 19:1-18; Psalm 59:1-17; 1 Samuel 19:19-20:42)
But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.
O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love. – Psalm 59:16-17
The threat against David’s life is getting increasingly worse. Though he is a skilled, fierce warrior he is at a great disadvantage with King Saul and his armies pursuing him. So he runs.
1 Samuel 19-20 tells the account of one of the many times David is in hiding. Often in these moments of despair David pulls out his quill and writes, pouring out his heart in song. That’s Psalm 59. It stands as a testimony of David’s unwavering faith in God for deliverance.
David begins with an appeal: “Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me” (v.1). He goes on to portray his adversaries as bloodthirsty dogs prowling the city. Yet, even in his turmoil, David’s faith remains steadfast as he declares, “But you, O Lord, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision (v. 8). He goes on to describe God as a “fortress” and “refuge” in times of distress (v. 16) actively defending him, not as a distant observer.
David’s song ends with a commitment to worship even in the face of trouble. “I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning” (v. 16). Take note, David’s determination to praise God, even before deliverance came, exemplifies his total trust in God. His security is rooted firmly in the love and goodness of God. Praise is never about the circumstances around us, it is about the posture of our heart.
Application:
- In moments of danger or distress, turn to God as your refuge and seek His divine protection. Rest in His sovereign power and control.
- Maintain faith in the midst of trials even when confronted with relentless attacks. Hold steadfast and confident.
- Remember God’s faithfulness in the past and choose to worship Him, not only after deliverance but even in the heat of the battle.

- Who or what represents the opposition in your life currently? How can you entrust these challenges to God’s care?
- What lessons might God be wanting to teach you through your current trials? Consider how these experiences can deepen your understanding of God’s character and strengthen your own.
Closing Prayer…
Dear Father, In the midst of life’s trials I seek your protection and strength. You are my fortress and refuge. Remind me of Your sovereignty and unfailing love. Help me to praise You in all things and at all times. And may my life reflect my trust and confidence in You. Amen.
