Why did Jesus have to die?

Why a Substitute Was Required
Today we are answering the question: Why was a Substitute Required? Couldn’t we fix ourselves or resolve the problem of sin on our own?
Why is it we love inspiration but we resist substitution?
- We might listen to advice.
- We love encouragement.
- We admire self sacrifice.
- But substitution is different.
Because substitution means we couldn’t do this ourselves. We have no capacity to FIX this problem no matter how hard we try or how much we want to– here, we are not enough.
And that’s hard for us.
This is where Christianity becomes real and so antithetical to humanistic ideology–
Here, Christianity is not philosophical or symbolic–it’s real and personal.
Because the cross isn’t just something Jesus did. It’s somewhere He stood for us because we could not.
The apostle Paul says this plainly:
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Think about what is being said here: “God made Jesus—who knew no sin—to be sin for us.”
That’s not poetry or prose. That’s literal exchange.
It’s important to understand that Jesus didn’t become sinful. But rather, He took the consequence of sin. Our consequence.
He didn’t die to show us how to live better. He died to stand where we deserved to stand.
Not anonymously. Not at a distance But…
Publicly. Face to face. Fully present
And when you realize that, there are really only two reactions:
Either it feels offensive…or it feels relieving.
Offensive if you still believe, “I should’ve been OR I AM able to fix this.”
Relieving if you’re tired of pretending you can or believing you have to
So here’s the honest question: If Jesus already stood in your place… what are you still trying to prove?
The gospel doesn’t say try harder. It doesn’t say clean yourself up or fix yourself first.
The gospel says: trust deeper in a God who loves you enough to provide a substitution–JESUS!
Application:
So here’s today’s steps. Not dramatic. Not pressured. Just upfront.
First: stop negotiating with grace. Grace isn’t a contract. It’s a gift.
- You don’t earn it by effort.
- You receive it by surrender.
Second: stop carrying what someone else already carried. You don’t have to keep standing under guilt, shame, or self-fixing.
Third: say one clear sentence today—out loud or quietly to God: “I need a Savior–I need Jesus.”
That sentence doesn’t complete the journey. It is a new beginning to discovering life with God.
So our prayer today is simple:
Jesus, today I stop standing where You already stood for me.I release what I’ve been trying to carry. I acknowledge that I need you to stand in my place to receive my sin.
I receive what You gave—freely.
Amen.
